Hull Geological Society
Obituary
Dr C W Wright (1917-2010).
Dr Claud William Wright died in February 2010. Willy Wright and his brother Ted joined the Society in the 1930s as teenagers. Their interest in Geology was encouraged by Tom Sheppard, the Curator of Hull Museums. They published several papers about local geology before the war and gave talks and displays at Society meetings. In 1942 they published a paper about the zones of the Yorkshire Chalk in the Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, which they admitted was a bit rushed. This still remains as essential reading for anyone studying our local chalk, more so because most of the pits they visited have now been lost. They are also famous for the discovery of the Ferriby Boats. After the war Willy lived and worked in London, but his interest in palaeontology continued. He wrote monographs about chalk ammonites and echinoids and contributed to the Treatise of Invertebrate Palaeontology. He received an honorary Doctorate from the University of Hull in recognition of his contributions to science as an amateur.
