Hull Geological Society
With sadness I have to start this report with a tribute to two key members of
the Society who passed away in the last year. Rod Towse had been our Treasurer
for 10 years and Stuart Jones was our current President. Rod joined the Society
in 2007 and Stuart joined in 2000. Stuart had organised numerous Roadshows for
the Society at Hornsea, Flamborough and Driffield as well as having been our
President three times. Rod and Stuart seemed always to be present at our
meetings for such a long time, it will seem strange for them not to be there.
Membership of the Society stands at 72 individuals, families and institutions.
Since our last AGM we have had
three lecture meetings, six lectures on Zoom, created six
photo sharing albums on Facebook,
a museum visit, ten club nights, one quiz, one “exam” night, six field
meetings or walks, one ‘finds night’ and four Roadshows or public displays.
If I am re-elected as your Secretary this will be my 40th year in the
role. Looking back to the Secretary’s Report for 1984-5 I see that there were 67
members and the minutes book shows that there had been nine field meetings and
six lecture meetings during the year.
Humberside Geologist number 4 had been printed that year. I think it is
fascinating to view how the Society has changed over the last 40 years – we now
hold a wider variety of less formal meetings and publish on our website and
social media to a wider audience. Over the forthcoming year I plan to write some
more about our recent history.
There are many people to thank for their contributions to our meetings and the
running of the Society. In particular I must mention that Graham Evans has
become our new Treasurer without having any real handover of the accounts. Also,
I congratulate Mary Howard for being awarded the Felix Whitham Memorial Medal in
recognition of her new contributions to our Roadshows and public displays. John
Connor in California has been a keen contributor to our Zoom meetings. On behalf
of the Society I thank the staff in the School of Environmental Sciences at the
University for their continued hospitality and support, in particular Professor
David Bond who has arranged the room bookings for our indoor meetings. Of course
I extend a big thankyou to all our members, without whose support the Society
would not be what it is today.
Mike Horne, March 2025.
