Hull Geological Society
In spite somewhat
inclement economic climate which has I believe been responsible for the decline
in attendances at field meetings during the year we have continued to have well
attended winter meetings and our membership is, in additional to honorary
members, sixty seven. It is however with considerable regret that I have to
record the death of two members. That of Dr Hubert Watson last November has
already been noted, however a few days ago we learned of the sudden death of Mr
R G Davies of Beverley. On behalf of the Society I have contacted Mrs Davies and
conveyed our condolences to her and her family.
This year has seen
the publication of Humberside Geologist in a more improved format, we hope that
members will consider the extra expense worthwhile. The organisation of the
printing and binding was undertaken by Mrs Rogers and we are grateful to her for
doing so.
Your Committee has
already given some thought to the fact that the Society will be celebrating its
centenary in 1988.part of our efforts are being directed to a survey of the East
Yorkshire Chalk. The project is being organised by Mike Horne and we hope that
members will rally around to lend a hand in this important work. Everyone can
contribute even if they only report new exposures etc. which can be
investigated.
The Society is also involved in the
compilation [a list of] of sites
of geological interest in the area.
I would like to thank all that have
contributed to the Society’s
Summer and Winter Programmes and of course to
the Department of Geology of Hull University who have continued to act as host
to our lecture meetings. I must also thank our President and Treasurer and
Committee for guiding and conducting the Society’s activities and in particular
Mike Horne to whom I am now handing over the role of Secretary.
It is now 32 years
since I first joined this Society and having been its Secretary for the last 12
years I feel it is time that I handed over to a younger member and I am sure you
will give Mike your full support in his secretaryship. However I will not be
disappearing from the scene and look forward to joining in the Society’s
activities for a few more years at least. In concluding I would like to put on
record the fact that it has been a pleasure to serve you as Secretary and to
thank you all for the support and cooperation which has made it such a
satisfying task.
Kenneth Fenton, 14th
March 1985.
