Hull Geological Society
Really the credit for the smooth
running of this year’s programme should go to the late Kenneth Fenton – I wish
he was here so that I could thank him properly. He had organised the Summer
Programme and most of the speakers for the Winter Programme before I started to
carry out the Secretary’s duties. Before his death, as well as guiding me
through the duties, he had started work on a major article for
Humberside Geologist on his favourite
topic – Jurassic Plants. He had also started to compile historical information
and material for the Society’s Centenary. I hope that I can maintain the high
standards that Ken has set.
The 1985 Summer
Programme, although poorly attended on occasions, was of very high quality. The
leaders had chosen interesting localities with ample opportunity for members to
collect. We experimented in hiring a minibus for the Derbyshire trip and were
able to fill every seat (and return with a heavy load of minerals!). I must
thank the leaders for the time they gave to the Society – not only on the day
but also in exploratory visit and preparing handouts for members attending the
meetings.
The Winter Programme
had a good start with the election of ten new members at the Members’ Evening. I
would like to thank all the members who exhibited specimens at that meeting and
all the guest speakers for the season. Special thanks are due to the Geology
Department for their help and hospitality.
The Centenary Chalk
Project is progressing steadily under the leadership of Mr. Whitham. We have
covered most of the Middle Chalk and hope to tie in the missing portions this
summer. More help would be appreciated on the fieldwork and in the preparation
and curation of specimens. Information about the location and state of
preservation of old chalk pits is of great value.
We are gathering articles for
Humberside Geologist and No. 5 is almost ready for publication.
Articles from members and friends are always welcome: in particular
reminiscences, both old and not so old, about the Society, its members and field
meetings are sought for inclusion in a future issue about the history of the
Society.
Arrangements for the
1986/7 Programmes are well underway. It is hoped that the Summer Programme will
include part II of Mr. Whitham’s Corallian trip and another mini-bus expedition
to Derbyshire. We have also invited local explorer Andy Eavis to speak to the
Society and he is preparing a 3D slide show about Chinese caves. A full list of
future meetings will be issued in due course. If members have any suggestions
for field or lecture meetings please let the Committee know.
Lastly I would like
to thank the Committee and Officers of the Society for their help.
Mike Horne, General
Secretary, February 1986.
